Hello and welcome to my auction!
Here we have a very rare State O’ Maine red and black velvet and black satin smoking jacket from the 1940’s-1950’s. I have never seen a jacket like this. Very unusual and unique.
There are three labels inside
- the one on the inside center top with a fabric hanging loop above it says, THE STORE FOR MEN MARSHALL FIELD & COMPANY. You can also see the dry cleaning tag, because it has been freshly dry cleaned. The other two small labels are sewn into a seam in the lining of the jacket. They say 40 (size) STATE O’ MAINE and the other small label says DRY CLEAN ONLY. This is a generous size 40. See measurements.
As you can see from the photos, it sports a black satin collar and cuffs with the pockets also having lined the outside of the pockets. The interior of the pockets is a lighter black fabric. The satin has sheen from wear but is all intact and strong. The red and black velvet is strong and beautiful. The jacket is a bit darker than in the photos. Think Santa Claus rich red!
The back has three black velvet panels that give the jacket a unique art deco look.
The interior is lined with black satin. No interior pockets.
Overall, in excellent condition with little wear for its age. A rarity to find and share with you. I know you will be pleased with it and all who see it, will be in awe.
