It cleans your soldering tips without water, meaning less chance of oxidation and it will not reduce the tip temperature. The wet sponge method of tip cleaning affects the temperature of the tip as well as reduces the life of the tip. The wire balls are made from brass coils, which are softer than the tip plating, yet harder than the oxidation that forms on the tip. To clean the tip, simply deep the iron tip into flux and plunge (stab) the iron into the holder, a great alternative to a wet sponge.
