Description
This is a vintage men’s tuxedo jacket or what some may refer to as a frock coat, dating to, I believe, to the late 1910s or the early 1920s, because of the more pronounced peak lapel. The manufacturer’s label on the inside interior pocket reads “Linett Formal Clothing Co., Inc. N.Y. Manufacturers Tuxedos”.
The retailer’s label reads “American Fashion Tailors 4618 Delmar Blvd. St. Louis MO.” and has a woven image of a circa 1920 era man in a tuxedo jacket.
It is made of an excellent quality black wool that is edged in silk piping along the lapels and opening in a purplish colour, and trimming the chest pocket and side pockets in black.
It has padded shoulders, a wide peak lapel and has a single “link front” button closure.
The cuff buttons consist of two larger and one smaller button, so probably aren’t original or maybe the larger ones are additions.
The interior is lined in a black fabric across the top and down the sides only - the back is unlined.
Sizing: The manufacturer’s label appears to imply a size 46, but this is more like a size 42.
Please rely on the following measurements for fit, comparing them to another jacket that you may own or your body measurements, allowing some room for fit:
Shoulders: 18 1/2” across seam-to-seam
Sleeves: 24 1/2” long
Sleeve Inseam: 17” long
Chest: 48” around, taken under the arms
Waist: 42” around
Overall length: 31 1/2“ long, measured flat
Condition:
The lining of the jacket is torn and worn at the upper back and at the bottom right side (see last two close-up photos).
In addition, the sleeve linings are unstitched at the armpit (see third from last photo).
Finally, the left shoulder/sleeve seam is missing a couple of stitches - not noticeable, but should be repaired so that the area doesn’t unstitch further.
Otherwise, the jacket is in very good condition, and with a few small repairs, will be ready to use - clean and without wear to the exterior fabric.
This is an unusual styled tuxedo by a New York manufacturer, sold in St Louis during the Jazz Age - wonderful piece!
